Does the Omicron variant of COVID-19 cause severe illness?

University Hospital, Denmark), has recently found that the Omicron variant of
COVID-19 (COVID-Omi), engineered using recombinant DNA technology with >98%
sequence identity to natural human erythroid differentiation factor (EpoR), is
more potent than wild-type COVID-19.
Dr. Terpstra’s team has also shown superior performance of COVID-Omi in
preventing adult respiratory distress syndrome, an acute lung injury
characterized by pulmonary inflammation and impaired gas exchange due to
diffuse alveolar damage caused by the inhalation or aspiration of toxic
substances foreign bodies that are either particulate or soluble.
In a study recently published in the journal “mBio”, Dr.
Terpstra and colleagues used a mouse model to show that COVID-Omi is more
pathogenic than wild-type COVID-19 and results in much more severe illness.
Mice infected with COVID-Omi had increased viral loads in the lungs, and
developed extensive lung inflammation, pneumonia, and adult respiratory
distress syndrome. In contrast, mice infected with wild-type COVID-19 had only
mild lung inflammation and no signs of adult respiratory distress syndrome.
These findings suggest that COVID-Omi may be more harmful than the
wild-type virus and could cause more severe illness in people who are infected.
More research is needed to further investigate the safety and efficacy of

reason I can come up with is that it must have been engineered for different
conditions—in which case, Delta or other mutated strains might not be able to
survive in Omicron-engineered conditions.
This brings us back to the second theory that makes sense about Omicron:
It infects Delta victims and makes them mutate even after they’ve died.
Technicalities aside, this would explain why there aren’t many documented cases
of survivors of COVID-19. The virus is spreading because it’s mutating people
who are already infected with Delta and, once they die, their bodies create
more of the virus. This also explains the high mortality rate of COVID-19.
Although either theory could be true, I think the evidence currently
