EXPERT REVIEW: 2022 Maruti Baleno
The Maruti Baleno was first showcased to the Indian car buying public in 2003 as a concept car at the Auto Expo. A few months later, it became available to people who wanted to buy one through Maruti Suzuki dealerships across India. The Maruti Baleno is an entry level sedan designed for urban markets like New Delhi and Mumbai. It lasted 8 years before being discontinued in 2011, where only its replacement remained on sale until 2018 which was replaced by the 2019 Swift. There were three generations of this car sold since 2003 – the original model (2003-2005), the Mk II (2005-2010) and finally Mk III (2011-2018). To some buyers, especially those that lived in cities like New Delhi and Mumbai, the Baleno was perfect for their needs – good fuel efficiency, simple design and a reliable engine.
The 2022 Maruti Baleno is an all new model that has been completely redesigned from the ground up. It is based on the same platform as the Suzuki Swift which is also manufactured by Maruti Suzuki in India. The most notable changes to the exterior are the new front grill, headlamps and taillamps. The interior has been completely revamped with a more modern look and feel. Buyers now have a choice of either a 5-speed manual or automatic transmission. The engine options are a 1.2L petrol or 1.3L diesel engine. Fuel efficiency is claimed to be 20km/l for the petrol and 28km/l for the diesel.
The Baleno is available in both S and Z trims. The S trim comes with features like power windows, keyless entry, air conditioning and a music system with Bluetooth connectivity. The Z trim adds alloy wheels, fog lamps, ABS with EBD and brake assist, front seat belts with pretensioners and side airbags.
So far, the reception to the new Baleno has been positive. Many buyers appreciate the fact that it is based on the Swift platform which means that it is reliable and has a good reputation for fuel efficiency. Some have criticised Maruti Suzuki for not offering more engine options (only 1.2L & 1.3L) but this is likely due to the fact that Maruti Suzuki wants to keep things simple for Indian buyers. On the other hand, some buyers have criticised the Baleno for looking too much like a Swift which means that it looks dated when placed next to cars like the Hyundai Verna, Honda City and even the new Datsun GO+.
Overall though, industry experts are expecting good sales numbers of around 25000 units per year since there is still an untapped market in India for small entry level sedans. The hopes are high that the 2022 Maruti Baleno will be one of India’s best selling vehicles of 2019!
